Over the years, we had purchased custom shutters, blinds and shades for about 30 windows and doors. They had provided quality work and service. Whenever there were minor repair issues they would find time to come by to correct.

Recently, however, when a part on one of the older Hunter Douglas blinds broke, I reached out to Barrows. The person who answered the phone seemed annoyed when I began to explain the problem and didn't want to hear about it. He simply asked me to fill out the repair form online for someone to get back to me. I completed the form and waited. Days later, when I didn't hear back from Barrows, I contacted Hunter Douglas support directly. Surprisingly, they responded the very next day with a set of instructions to identify the broken part. They then shipped me a replacement part at no charge. Using the instructions provided, we were able to make the repair ourselves, before I even heard back from Barrows.

Two weeks after I completed the repair form on Barrows' website, someone there called us and left a message to call them back to schedule a repair. But I had already fixed the problem with the much more responsive customer support from Hunter Douglas.

We have twice worked with Barrows in the past 2 years. A pleasure to deal with: they offer a wide variety of products; once we chose what we wanted, a rep quickly scheduled an appointment to come to our house to measure, and when the shades were ready, they handled the installation very quickly. It's true their products can be pricey but the quality is far better than we used to get at a big box store, and the service can't be beat.

Over the last 30 years, I have bought window treatments from Barrows for 19 windows and 3 doors. In some cases, I needed to replace some of these and once again, called Barrows. They have always treated me fairly. However, recently, I called them because a couple of the plastic holders on the pull cords of my hunter douglas duette honeycomb shades fell apart and one of the shades kept separating from the clamp at the top of the window. Barrows told me it would be $150 for someone to come repair the clamp and that, since Hunter Douglas no longer makes shades with pull cords, the only solution to the pull cord problem would be to buy new shades. This seemed like an expensive solution.

I went to King Shade in West Roxbury. The owner there looked to see if he had any of the plastic holders in stock to give me. He did not, but suggested I call Hunter Douglas. He also told me how to fix the clamp so the shade would no longer separate. I called Hunter Douglas, got a very friendly woman on the phone who told me they'd send me the plastic holders at no cost. I asked her to send me 2. Today, 4 plastic holders arrived in the mail.

So, by looking further, I saved myself $150 plus the cost of 2 new shades and their installation. I am appalled by Barrows lack of good customer service. I will be moving within the next 2 years and will need all new window treatments. Sadly, I will no longer be doing business with Barrows. Clearly, that doesn't matter to them.

This showroom is filled with options from the simple to the exquisite. Staff helped me choose 3 large window shades and expertly measured, ordered and installed them. After 4 years, I had a problem with one of the large shades. Once I contacted the company, they had workers at my home in a matter of hours to address it. That's customer service.
